Every year in October, the Cancer Support Group (CSG) of the Commission organises an Awareness Day centred on a particular health theme.
“Cancer and the Family” is the chosen title of this year’s event on Thursday 6 October from 12.00 – 15.00 in the Berlaymont Piazza.
A series of stands will be attended by representatives from various cancer organisations who have been invited to provide information and present their work particularly in relation to the support available to family members when someone close to them is diagnosed with cancer. Caring for and supporting someone who is seriously ill is a physically and mentally demanding task and these people often need support as much as the patients.
Children and Parents
When a parent develops cancer, this always has a dramatic impact on a child. We are delighted that our guest Nathalie Slosse of the Talismanneke organization (www.talismanneke.be) will be presenting her book “Grand Arbre est malade” at 13.30.This is a simple children’s story with an important message for adults as to how to help their toddlers cope with serious illness within the family.
On the other hand, cancer in children is a parent’s nightmare and, in this regard, we have invited SIOP (the European Society for Paediatric Oncology), a pan-European organisation dedicated to childhood cancer, and the Belgian asbl “Ensemble Pas à Pas”.
Included amongst our other guest organisations committed to cancer prevention and patient and family support are the Association of European Cancer Leagues (ECL) who will be displaying the work of their members from 22 countries across Europe, “Vivre Comme Avant” which offers support to breast cancer patients, the Belgian “Fondation contre le Cancer” which operates at a national level, and “We Care”, a Belgium-based English-speaking support group for women with cancer.
Professionals from a number of medical establishments in Belgium as well as from the Commission’s medical service have also been invited to attend. Colleagues from other institutions are more than welcome.
