Context
Breast cancer is the most common cancer globally with around 2.3 million new cases every year. It represents one in eight cancer cases in both sexes and a quarter of all cancers in women with 70% mortality occurring in resource constrained settings. Health system barriers and patient level factors including fear, stigma and low levels of awareness and knowledge are among factors contributing to low uptake of early detection services, with resultant late-stage diagnoses and poor outcomes. In many resource-constrained settings, breast cancer affects a relatively younger population significantly leading to premature mortality and maternal orphans. Efforts to mitigate breast cancer have significant implications for addressing gender, socioeconomic disparities and sustainable development goals particularly on gender equality, good health and well-being and reduced inequalities.
The World Health Organization (WHO) launched the Global Breast Cancer Initiative (GBCI) in 2021 to reduce mortality rates by 2.5% per year by 2040 to save 2.5 million lives through three strategic pillars of action: health promotion for early detection, timely diagnosis; and comprehensive breast cancer management. For nearly 40 years, the breast cancer awareness month (BCAM) is celebrated globally every October to promote awareness and screening for breast cancer.
In October 2024 we seek to highlight the importance of early detection, timely diagnosis, comprehensive treatment for breast cancer and the importance of providing support for persons diagnosed with breast cancer including tools such as patient navigation. It also provides an opportunity for all stakeholders to review progress, reflect and renew commitments in tackling the disease and to build momentum to address the existing disparities and challenges in access to breast cancer care.
Objectives
To create awareness to improve uptake of breast cancer screening and early diagnosis;
To provide an opportunity for knowledge sharing and dissemination of information and to encourage collaboration to reduce breast cancer mortality;
To build advocacy for country adoption of the WHO’s Global Breast Cancer Initiative and prioritize its implementation within national health systems to improve breast cancer outcomes;
To launch the Technical Brief on Patient Navigation for Early Detection, Diagnosis and Treatment of Breast Cancer.
